Scones

1/2 cup margarine

4 cups flour

4 teaspoons baking powder

1 egg

2/3 cup sugar

1 cup milk

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Rub margarine into flour. Add baking powder, salt and sugar. Beat egg and add milk. Mix liquid into dry ingredients to make a manageable dough. Neither too firm or too slack.

Turn onto floured board. Roll 1" thick and cut into rounds. Arrange on a lightly floured baking sheet. Bake at 420 until risen or brown.

Yields 18 scones. Brush the top with beaten eggs and sprinkle sugar on top.
